Presentation: How to Use Assessment and Evaluation to Promote Quality Immersion Programs and Student Outcomes in the Era of NCLB

Kathryn Lindholm-Leary is professor of Child and Adolescent Development at San Jose State University, where she has taught for 15 years. At San Jose State, Dr. Lindholm-Leary received a Teacher-Scholar award, was a finalist for the President's Scholar award, and was a San Jose State nominee for the prestigious Wang Family Excellence award. Dr. Lindholm-Leary has worked with dual language education programs for the past 18 years and during that time has evaluated over 30 programs and helped to establish programs in over 50 school districts in 10 states. Dr. Lindholm-Leary has presented her findings on dual language education programs at many local, state, national and international meetings. Her findings appear in newspapers, professional newsletters, professional journal articles, and book chapters. She has authored or co-authored two books in dual language education. One book, entitled Dual Language Education (published by Multilingual Matters), focuses on the theory, implementation issues, and evaluation outcomes in dual language education. Another book, entitled Profiles in Two-Way Immersion Education, with coauthors at the Center for Applied Linguistics, is a case study of three different two-way bilingual immersion models. Dr. Lindholm-Leary also prepared a booklet for the US Department of Education and the National Clearinghouse for English Language Acquisition entitled Biliteracy for a Global Society: An Idea Book on Dual Language Education.
