In this presentation we will report on the events of the Canadian Indigenous Language and Literacy Development Institute Cree Immersion day camp over two summers (2003 and 2004) and make recommendations as to how we see the development and research here can benefit other indigenous language immersion programs. We will present the aspects of the intergenerational language use that we see as central to language revitalization efforts.

Paper Session: Discourse in Dual Immersion

An ethnographic discourse analysis of a dual immersion Spanish/English classroom in Northern California, this study examines the effects that status, or relative power, has on student participation. We'll see video data of students and look closely at the ways in which this dual immersion program takes on the project of creating more equitable alternative "discourses"for learning. We'll look at the implications of this project for diverse and bilingual learning environments in general.

For many years educators involved in Early French Immersion in Canada's only officially bilingual province, have called for assistance in providing intervention for those children who struggle to become effective and proficient readers in their second language. "Literacy Intervention in Early French Immersion" is a pilot project designed to assist struggling second language readers improve their reading competence and increase their confidence and overall performance in Early French Immersion.

Discussion Session: Starting a Two-way Bilingual Immersion Program in a Secondary School

Starting a new program in two languages has presented challenges. Nevertheless, it has granted our school the opportunity to successfully implement a rigorous curriculum via true 50:50 two-way bilingual immersion, resulting in documented academic success. We will be prepared to discuss with the group such issues as choice of model, student population, faculty selection and training, recruitment and selection of students, dealing with early adolescence, articulation with elementary and high school and scheduling.

1) Rationale: The need for a grammar scope and sequence will be
discussed and supported with immersion research,
2) Goals: What is accomplished by having this document?
3) Process: An overview of the steps included in development and design, and
4) Challenges and Rewards: Issues/benefits involved in this process.
