Situation
2: Dialogue 2 The parts in blue are important supporting strategies. 友達A: あ、島田、いいところで会った。ちょっと頼みがあるんだ。
A, Shimada, iitokorode atta. Chotto tanomiga arunda. ‘Hey, Shimada.
I was going to ask you a favor.’ 友達B:
うん、何? Un, nani? ‘Okay, what is it?’ 友達A: あのさ、先週の国際関係論のノート、持ってるでしょ。
Anosa, senshuuno kokusai kankeironno nouto, motteru desho?’ ‘Well, you
have last week’s notes from the international relations class, don’t you?’ 友達B:
うん、持ってるよ。
Un, motteruyo. ‘Yeah, I do.’ 友達A: あれ、ちょっと貸してくれる?

kashite kureru? ‘Could you just lend them to me?’ 友達B: あー、あのでも、ノート見てもね、あれ、意味ないかもしれない。 ほらあの授業ってディスカッションが主じゃない。 Aa, ano demo, nouto mitemone, are iminai kamo shirenai. Hora ano jugyoutte disukasshonga
omo janai? ‘Well, um,
it may not be useful. See, the class is
discussion-based.’ [Providing a reason for
the refusal] 友達A: ああ、ディスカッションなんて楽勝だからさ、ノート貸してよ。
Aa, disukasshon nante rakushou dakarasa, nouto kashiteyo. ‘Oh,
discussions are easy. Could you just
lend me your notes?’ 友達B: うーん、でも実はさ、友達に貸しちゃっててもう今日もってないんだ。 Uun, demo
jitsuwasa, tomodachini kashichatte mou kyou motte nainda. ‘Well, actually I’ve already lent them to another friend and
I don’t have them today.’ [Providing a reason for
the refusal] 友達A: えー、じゃあ、明日の夜はだめ?
Ee, jaa ashitano yoruwa dame? ‘Oh, then, how
about tomorrow night?’ 友達B: 明日か、でもその人明日返してくれるかわかんないし、まだちょっとなんとも言えないや。 Ashitaka, demo sono hito ashita kaeshite kureruka wakannaishi, mada chotto nantomo
ienaiya. ‘Tomorrow. But I
don’t know if she’ll give them back by tomorrow. I can’t really say anything at this point.’ [Providing a reason for the refusal] 友達A: うん、そうか、じゃ、他探すわ。ありがとう。
Un, souka,
ja, hoka
sagasuwa. Arigatou. ‘Okay.
I see, then, I’ll try someone else. Thanks.’ 友達B:
うん。ごめんね。
Un. Gomenne.
