Instructional Strategies for CBI

There are many instructional strategies to support content-based instruction (CBI), and most are simply reflective of good teaching. Yet in CBI, such strategies are not optional--they are absolutely essential to ensure that students will be successful content learners and language users. In this instructional module, we highlight ten core instructional strategies that are important for CBI.

In the menu to the left, you will find a number of readings with accompanying guided comprehension questions. These readings provide a general overview of a number of instructional strategies. In addition, ten specific instructional strategies are listed to the left and each of these provides a general introduction to and background information about the strategy. Some descriptions provide links to helpful handouts to support learning of the strategy. Finally, we demonstrate how each strategy is implemented in practice with models from our CoBaLTT units.

Please use the Menu in the column to the left to navigate through the module.
