Introduction to Dual Language Immersion–NEW!
June 26–30, 2023
Synchronous* 1-week online summer institute
This institute has been designed for future or new educators and administrators in K-12 Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs, including one-way, two-way, indigenous, and developmental bilingual schools. Presenters and guest speakers will share the three foundations of DLI instruction: 1) Bilingualism/Biliteracy; 2) Academic Achievement in two languages; and 3) Intercultural competence PLUS critical consciousness (Three Pillars PLUS). Participants will review aspects and instructional strategies of well-implemented programs, including for 3rd language learners, English home language students (EHL) and English Learners (ELs). Working together, the group will explore unit/lesson plans and observational protocols that include instructional practices that integrate language and academic content, including the CAPA sequence (Tedick & Lyster; 2020) and the Bridge/Biliteracy Unit Framework (Beeman & Urow, 2012). The week will culminate with a toolbox presentation and will include Q & A sessions with practicing DLI educators and administrators.
After this institute, you will be able to:
-
Identify the three foundational pillars of Dual Language Immersion;
-
Describe how intercultural competence and critical consciousness are interrelated;
-
Recognize qualities and practices of a well implemented DLI program, including instructional strategies;
-
Plan for language allocation with an eye to biliteracy development; and
-
