2024 Summer Institutes for Language Teachers
Join the more than 7,700 language educators who have taken a CARLA Summer Institute. This year, CARLA will offer ten online institutes and four in-person institutes, all of which are designed to link research and theory with practical applications for the classroom.
The 2024 CARLA Summer Institutes will be offered in the following formats:
- Online–Asynchronous
- Online–Synchronous
- In-Person on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis
- Asynchronous institutes are primarily conducted on the participant's own time, but are not available after the specified time period.
- Asynchronous institutes include preset deadlines for activities. The deadlines are important, as the activities build on each other and involve facilitation from the instructor and collaboration with other participants.
- You should be prepared to fully participate in the institute activities to benefit you and your fellow participants.
- It is important to note that CARLA’s asynchronous institutes are not stand-alone online modules or MOOCs; rather they are designed to provide an interactive experience. It is NOT possible to “take” the course at a time other than the specified institute dates.
- Some of the asynchronous institutes also include some mandatory synchronous sessions.
- Registrants must check dates/times of any synchronous sessions to ensure their ability to fully participate. They must also be available to work on activities during the specified time period of the institute and meet class deadlines.
- Synchronous institutes meet online in real time via Zoom.
- Synchronous institutes include time to work independently off-screen; however, much of the class time will be spent online in large group and small group activities.
- Registrants must be available to participate for each entire day during the institute.
Target Audience: CARLA summer institutes listed below are primarily targeted at elementary through postsecondary foreign/world language educators and language teacher educators. In some cases, the institutes are also appropriate for ESL or EFL teachers. Many of the institutes are not appropriate for the special needs of immersion educators, though three are directly targeted at the unique needs of DLI educators. The institutes are not meant for teachers of very young children (pre-K) and most are not appropriate for teachers of kindergarten students.
Click the title for detailed information about each institute; refer to the bottom of each page for more information about the target audience to make sure that the institute is suitable for your teaching context.
