It is very likely that word play and rhymes helped you learn and retain facts and concepts you learned when you were in elementary school. In fact, some kids may remember the year Columbus landed in the Americas thanks to the verse “In fourteen hundred and ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.”
Some of these rhymes provide a convenient lifetime memory aid for a rule. One example is the spelling rule “i before e except after c.”
