Compliment Sequences

What types of pragmatic strategies are used for complimenting and responding to compliments?

In this section of the module, we will focus on the language strategies you can use to compliment and respond to compliments appropriately. While working through each of the different strategies, remember that they each work interactively in conversation, not in isolation.

This section is divided into two parts: Compliments & Compliment Responses. You may enter each component by clicking on its button below. After you have worked through both sections, you are then ready to move on to the next section as indicated at the bottom of this page.

Compliment Strategies


Below is a list of strategies that you will be learning to use in order to compliment appropriately.
  1. Hearer-oriented strategies are more common than speaker-oriented strategies.
  2. ¡Qué __________________! is a commonly used structure.
  3. Positive irony, or sarcasm, is another way of extending a compliment (in other words, by saying the opposite of what you mean).

Compliment Refusal Strategies

Below is a list of strategies that you will be learning to use in order to respond to a compliment appropriately.

  1. A request for clarification or repetition of the compliment.
  2. Use of reciprocal action to maintain closeness in a relationship.
