What types of pragmatic strategies are used for requesting?

In this section of the module, we will focus on the language strategies you can use to make requests appropriately. Remember they each work interactively in conversation, not in isolation.

Request Strategies

Below is a list of strategies that you will be learning to use in order to make requests appropriately.

  1. Conventionally indirect requests are the most commonly used strategy for requesting.
  2. Hearer-oriented strategies are primarily used over speaker-oriented strategies.
  3. Commands are a common request strategy in some contexts.
  4. Negation can be used as a request strategy.
