Unit 1: Using Written Texts, Part C

Before you watch:

Do learners need to know every word of a text before they are asked to read it or do something with it in class? Why, or why not?


After you watch:

What does it mean to, in David Nunan’s words, “vary the task, not just the text”? How might this help us to use authentic texts even in low-level classrooms?

In this part of the video, the participants were working with a travel agency advertisement. Can you think of other kinds of texts with which students might be able to draw on real-world, contextual, and linguistic prior knowledge?
