Digital Storytelling: Preparation Activities

Here are some preparation activities to begin a storytelling project:

  1. Use Bubbl.us for brainstorming story ideas
    • click "start brainstorming"
    • there are instructions at the bottom right of the window
    • create an account when you save

  2. Create a "story map" of the plot line of your story
    • Use this story map sketch from Jason Ohler (pdf)
    • have students read their story ideas to each other in a "story circle"
    • use the "7 elements" to give feedback to those in your circle

  3. Find images to illustrate your story
    • use Flickr - see Creative Commons near the bottom of the page
    • or take a series of your own photos
    • collect them all in one folder on your computer
    • do you need to edit them?  Use Picnik to crop just what you want
    • see the "Using Digital Images" module for more information

Now we're ready to write the first draft
(continue on to the "Create" section)!
